Templeton’s Master of Arts in Teaching offers a distinctively classical and personal approach to training working teachers. Like Great Hearts, we believe education—of students or their teachers—should involve more than merely accumulating information. It should form intellectual virtue, cultivate a love for learning, nurture a moral life of wisdom, and prepare people to serve the common good.
In order to lead students toward these ends, we believe teachers must pursue them in their own lives and thus be the kinds of persons they hope their students become. The classical tradition reminds us that deep formation like this happens best in small communities of learners gathered around common objects of love. Therefore, the Templeton MAT is designed to bring working teachers together with one another and in close community with Templeton professors.
Blending online courses with two residential sessions on our west Philadelphia campus, students and professors will explore the methods, materials, and ethos of classical education through the integrated study of Great Books and classical pedagogy. The Templeton MAT will enable any Great Hearts educator in any discipline to become both a master learner and a master teacher. We look forward to welcoming you to the Templeton community.
